a new type of bug bite

Post by Chip Down » April 3rd, 2021, 7:57 am

Encountered a bug bite that's new to me.

Noticed a little fly-like critter on my arm. Brushed it away. I don't remember if I felt discomfort at that moment, but I kinda think I did. Otherwise, it would be weird for me to notice or care about a little gnat on my arm. But there certainly wasn't great discomfort, or I'd remember that for sure.

Almost immediately, a small dark spot appeared, maybe about a mm in diameter, and very dark, as if blood was pooled just below the skin.

A couple days later, there's swelling, but very abrupt and firm, and a bit amorphous (not perfectly round). No discoloration, not particularly itchy or painful.

My greatest fear is that this unknown critter deposited her eggs in my arm, and her offspring will soon claw their way out when viable. (I'm mostly kidding.)

Any idea what that bug might be? Ever experienced this?

the best humor has a grain of truth to it?

there's some bug that deposits an egg in you, then a worm grows and you can see it wiggling around in you :)

(I have no idea what your bug bite might be, probably nothing)

I don't know what they are, but they don't claw their way out. They always claw their way to your brain.

The bot fly is the most common bug that deposits eggs in you. I got one many decades ago, but it was from a jungle trek in Guatemala. But they are in the US, they just get cows here mostly. I don't think it left any mark right off the bat. Bot flies do come out when ready.

In your case, I think an MRI is called for.

Seems like most of the weird bug bites I end up getting turn out being some sort of spider bite. Sort of early for bee stings, mosquito bites and the like. Good time for ticks though.

You could search through this page to see if anything matches.

Hopefully it doesn't end up being something like this:

No, I couldn't see it. I wish I could have because it took three doctor visits to convince the doctor that it wasn't just some infection, that he needed to open it up, that there was something in there. I could feel it moving around. It's easy to laugh at 25 years on, not so much when it was happening.

Most likely they don't go for stout drinking folks - makes the blood too thick, so Chip should be fine.
