Vulcan Lake/Vulcan Peak Completely Unaccessible!!

Post by larix lyalli » March 31st, 2021, 9:33 pm

On Wednesday, March 24th I attempted to drive to the Johnson Butte Trailhead [https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guid ... _Trailhead] to hike Vulcan Lake [https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guid ... _Loop_Hike] and Vulcan Peak [https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guid ... _Peak_Hike] . Unfortunately after driving around a hour in from Brookings, the forest service road 1909, the only way to get to the trailhead, was completely blocked by a landslide :(. There were both many trees on the road and large piles of rocks blocking the road. It was completely unpassable, and don't attempt to drive to Vulcan Lake/Peak until you confirm with the Forest Service that the road is clear! See attached photo and the google maps screenshot for slightly more precise location.

Hopefully you notified the Forest Service. I don't see anything posted on their page for the trail.

It's early in the season and these kinds of winter blockages are not uncommon. The Field Guide doesn't recommend you go up there until "mid-spring", which would be a month from now.
