I did that once - drove until I bottomed out.

I put chains on and backed out. I had many days of food and so forth so I wasn't too worried.

Several times I drove to a trailhead. It snowed. I had to drive back out in the snow. But it was only a couple inches. As predicted by weather reports. I wouldn't do it if many inches of snow were predicted.

Did I ever mention the time I drove up Larch Mountain to see where I would get stuck? Dug myself out as more snow was falling, and backed down. Good times.

Worst part is when you have to leave the trailhead and drive up to get over a pass to get home.

Cross country skied up to Larch Mtn parking lot on 1/29/21.

The lot has about a foot of snow. Major improvement over zero snow there a few weeks ago.

Lots of driving on the road past the snow gate.

Thanks MK, I was wondering about Larch. Was in the area Friday (same day as you) and considered going up to check it out. Too bad, we almost met. Who's driving past the gate, I wonder.

Chip, yeah, too bad we didn't cross paths!

People have worked a way around the gate on both sides. There are big tire ruts through the dirt and snow on the sides. The gate has also been opened by someone at some point and was open when I got there. It seemed like the lock was gone, too.

It shows the average snow depth over an area about 1/2 mile x 1/2 mile

I have found that if it shows any snow at all, there are probably patches difficult to drive or walk over. You can't figure that if it only says 2 inches, it's okay.

It snowed yesterday (Sunday). There was a trace of slush remaining at 1250', and then in the trees just a little higher. By 2600' it was about 6" deep (estimate, not measured). Washington side of gorge.

Kings Mountain Sunday 2/7/21. Snow started are around 2700ft and was 6in at the Summit.

A day later, just a few miles away, on the NW side of Silver Star, there was less snow at 3600' than I saw yesterday at 2600'. This had nothing to do with melting; the texture was fine and crisp, as laid down, with no signs of significant melt. I have no doubt it would be possible to summit Silver Star without snowshoes. Of course, the situation will be different by the time you read this.
