I've seen bears a few times, always amazingly cool

You have to always have your camera instantly ready

This is a good time to see bears. Especially Mountain Laurel Ash berries along the Timberline trail on Mt Hood

Saw one on the Herman Creek Cutoff trail, early morning goin' up to Green Point Mtn... thought it was a German shepherd, once I figured out it was a big bear, 2 cubs scampered up the trees on either side of her! Made a slow, quiet, departure.

I have seen black bears in the Gorge exactly once (on the back end of Tanner butte). They just don't seem to be very common. In the North Cascades or Olympics, by contrast, I have seen *lots*. Want to see black bears? Go to the alpine parkland zone of Olympic National Park when the huckleberries are ripe. (typically mid-september). You'll see scores.

My closest bear, 60 yards away. He arched his back to show me how big he was and walked on. Ochoco Nat Forest.
