Many people would like a job where they get paid to walk up to a seismometer to maintain it, tough to carry up all the equipment needed to install it though

I think that's a great idea to install seismometers to warn us about eruptions. Even just understand it better for academic reasons.

I'm critical of extreme Wilderness advocates that file lawsuits for any incursion. It puts a bad image of environmentalists. We need to move away from extreme partisanship either direction.

Although seismic equipment was approved for wilderness area, it was different than that approved for outside the wilderness, at least in the vicinity of Adams where Friends of Mt Adams was consulted and we approved.

There are few absolute prohibitions for what can be done in wilderness, the law allows the managing agency a lot of latitude, but some choose not to use it much or at all. Others more so. Designated wilderness in the Olympics allows use of chain saws given the trees they have to deal with, for example. These are chain saws with handles on both ends.

I recently read an article that showed how recent research has proven that the magma chambers for volcanoes can be much further from the volcano than was previously thought. There is a lot still to learn.

Wait wait guys we have to coordinate. If one seismometer registers stomping it gets discounted as an anomaly. If we each go to a different seismometer and we all stomp at the same time it will register a quake!

No I actually do support installing these seismometers, and I don't think it's too much of an incursion into the wilderness. We definitely need better monitoring for Hood, especially with Timberline and everything sitting right below the crater.

Looks like they're still working out the kinks, though... the lines don't usually go up diagonally like this!



I agree that it's about time they put a few more seismometers up there. Looks like they have Hood fairly well covered now.

Should I take from your sarcasm that you're one of the extreme wilderness advocates who was against this being put in ? I agree that wilderness areas deserve protection but geez, I can't believe how short-sided and uncompromising some people are. It's crazy that seismic monitoring could be controversial in any way. Sure, the thing isn't the most attractive, but real life involves making compromises.

Did you know that the USGS has Mt St. Helens and Mt Hood and Crater Lake all at the same threat level ('very high'). Go figure.
