When I did the loop a few weeks ago I walked past those various camps at and near the high point as well as saw easy water access. I love those high alpine camps, so off I went last Friday. Since the road up to Cloud Cap and Tilly Jane is a nuisance, I hiked up from the base of the Tilly Jane trail near Cooper Spur Ski area. 3500 feet up in about 5 miles.

Yeah, that's a great place to camp.
Where did you get drinking water.
You must be able to go up that ridge and then continue to cooper spur, tie in rock?
Or continue the other direction and go down to mt hood meadows. I think you've done that before.

My spot was about 100 yards north of the large cairn that marks the high spot. The ravine 100 yards the other direction had decent water, even in the morning. I wonder what the extended heat wave we are now going into is going to do to it. I think most of the water there is from a snowfield just above and I'm not sure it will outlast a long heat wave.
I also wonder what an extended heat wave will do to all the water crossings for loopers. Could be tough by the weekend.

that stream is sometimes very silty

Not as crazy as it sounds. Tends to be ignored, except when the gate to Cloud Cap is closed. But it's a nice trail, isn't it? Still, I wouldn't lug camping gear up it.

not too many other people
if you hike from cloudcap or tilly jane, the distance to the top isn't that great. Isn't that bad to add a few miles by going from the bottom

Jerry - the water was clear this trip.
Chip - I'm just a sucker for a good trail. And I have been up this trail many times - mostly on skis or snowshoes, like you say, when the road is gated.
