Thanks for posting this. Its a little outside of the normal driving range, so nice to see a different region i'm not familiar with. Two questions:
- What is the earliest you can hike this general region without technical gear?
- What is the hammock-camping potential?

Re: Trinity Alps June 2020
Good hammocking. Above 6000 feet or so trees start getting sparse
I looked back at a couple years - june 15, 2017 there was snow at about 6500 feet, so hard to get over those 7500 foot passes. June 11, 2016 there was no snow at the granite creek pass 7500 feet, but there was at the deer creek pass also 7500 feet

Funny to see this - I just got back from a 3-day backpacking trip in the Trinity Alps with my two older kids (age 10 and 12). We also stayed in the Scott Mountain campsite (right next to the PCT) on the drive down!
This is Canyon Creek Lakes - the most popular, crowded hike in the Trinity Alps (but still totally worth it). 8 miles in to the upper lake, and then some cross-country exploration. Usually in June there is still quite a bit of snow, but this was a low snow year and everything was melted out.
It's a great way to get some early-season granite, and without the long drive down to the Sierras ...

I have heard Canyon Creek is nice
It's on the opposite side of the Trinity Alps, maybe 30 miles further away
Trinity Alps is a huge area with many areas

It looks though like most of the vast Trinities are lowland forests. The areas with alpine granite seem fairly limited.

Re: Trinity Alps June 2020
yeah, the trinities tends to have ridges of granite as opposed to large plains of granite like the sierras
I met up with DRM several years ago on the way up to Deer Lake
