Tom, Dick & Harry Mtn 11/4-5/19

Post by ghsmith76 » November 6th, 2019, 1:11 pm

My dog, Brook, and I just did an overnighter to Tom, Dick & Harry mountain, and it was as good as it gets. From my perspective the view from TDH of Mt Hood and the many other mountains to the north is a backpackers treat. Clear skies is a must but getting comfortable temperatures in November was more then I could have hoped for. Image

We made it to our campsite around 4 pm and setup camp in preparation for darkness to hit early. The last time we were up here about a year ago the temperature got down to 25 degrees and Brook nearly froze. This time I got her a new jacket to possibly help if needed.

As the sun went down it got really cold, probably got to 38 but the breeze was out of the west and it felt good. The first time I got up I could tell the temperature was rising, it felt great and I could tell that Brook was also happy with it. By sunrise the temperature was 45. Brook seemed very happy and showed her appreciation with many kisses.

The one concern though was just how little snow there was on Mt Hood. When I started down from TDH the temperature was about 60. From what I found out upon driving back to the Portland area was that the valley had been stuck in a temperature inversion which made for very unpleasant foggy days.

My blog post about this trip is more about my dog: Titled: My Dog is Complicated https://adventurecontinues.org/2019/11/ ... mplicated/

In the blog post I talk more about the lack of snow on Mt Hood.

I was up there today. What really struck me was how green and lush the trail looked as you went above the lake. I like fall colors just fine, but it was a treat to be warm and green and have a pretend spring in November.

In your blog post, I love that first pic of Brook, which I think I remember from a TR. Clearly, she's thinking about leaving you and heading home. Surely many members here have seen that look from family members.
