Looking for 2-3 night dog friendly loop within 3-4 hrs of PDX

Post by Rickerus » August 14th, 2019, 11:15 am

Hi all,
New here, and relatively new to the Portland area. Apologies if I've overlooked this topic elsewhere on the forum, but I gave it an honest try - I promise. We basically have from next Wed, Aug 21 to Sat, Aug 24 for a 2-3 night backpacking adventure. We'll be getting a mid morning start from Portland on Wed, so can't get too far out that day.

Basically, my fiance and I are looking for recommendations for a dog friendly backpacking loop. We're happy to get permits, but also recognize that availability may be scant this late in the game. We're in good shape and are well experienced, so 20-30 miles (total) would be fine. We're open to coastal or mountains.

Thanks in advance!

Herman Ck / PCT loop is I think about 23 miles, in the Gorge. Not many views except if you do the short spur to the top of Chinidere Mtn. But won't be too crowded on your days and permit is just self-serve at the trailhead. You will need to buy a parking permit (maybe unless you park down below).

There aren't a lot of short loops close by. For more alpine views close by you could do an out-and-back on Mt Hood or Adams.

I've found a couple of other possibilities through various searches:

1. How about Goat Rocks?
2. or, alternatively, this: https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guid ... adows_Hike I just can't tell if my dog is allowed on this one

I'm pretty sure dogs are allowed at both

Dogs are allowed at both. Goat Rocks loop is shorter than your mileage and Glacier Meadows is not a loop trail, and is also even shorter. There are a huge number of choices if you don't do a loop.
