Mcintyre Ridge 6-21-19: shotgun shell cleanup

Post by AaronPDX » June 27th, 2019, 9:32 am

From the quarry, hiked east on Douglas Trail onto Mcintyre Ridge. This time I hiked further than I have in the past, ending not too far from the northern wilderness boundary. Alas, at a lovely viewpoint, there were fairly fresh ATV (?) tracks -- I could not figure out where they originated! -- and tons of shotgun shells and trash.

Here's a pic of the shells I hauled out. If each of us takes a bit of trash with, we can really make an impact.

Thanks for cleaning all that up!

That area has had a chronic OHV problem for years. After the trailhead at the end of Road 110 was closed, an unofficial trailhead was established at the end of Road 108, which is also where OHVs were accessing the trail. Once TKO helped build the new Douglas Trailhead the Forest Service closed off access to Road 108, but it seems they re-opened it again.

What is it about the target shooting crowd? I see so much of their trash that it's hard to make a dent in cleaning it up. Thanks for your work, Aaron.

Don, those photos are shocking. Where'd that take place?

Justpeachy, thanks for the info. I'll contact the FS to ask about the road reopening, and will report back.

I was just at McGee Creek trailhead last weekend where an angel of a gentleman was searching and collecting shell casings. 22 caliber in this case I believe. It was his hobby to collect them at trailheads as it was interesting to see the types and to clean up the forest. What a guy!

Thanks for your work too! I always try to pick up the trash I see on-trail, but these angels take it to a new level.
