Olallie Lake area too buggy now?

Post by rhettlawrence » June 6th, 2019, 8:28 pm

Is it the consensus that going down to the Olallie Lake area next weekend (June 14-16) will just be too miserable because of the skeeters? Was hoping to try the Red Lake trail for the first time, but from what I'm reading, I've missed my window to get up there before the mosquitoes come out and probably need to wait till later in the summer if I want to enjoy it. Anybody been up in the area in the last few days to provide a skeeter report?

Not sure what the snow level is this year, but I had found on past trips that July 4th is the time the snow melts enough on the PCT to walk without soaking your feet and deet becomes your friend. I have found this basically true for all of my trips tot he Cascade alpine lakes. Perhaps you will have enough snow to keep the bugs at bay.

Thanks. Other inquiries have led me to believe I've probably missed the window before the mosquitoes set in, especially with the hot weather coming this week. Oh well - maybe later this summer....
