It's a good example of how 'hard' science is actually in a state of constant flux and revision. All Gorge botanizers before about 2000 thought their two species were deltoidea and sagittata. It may have been phylogenetics that introduced careyana to the Gorge list and gradually pushed sagittata farther east. I do not think careyana was in Russ Jolley's Gorge lexicon, for example . . . so no one needs to feel shamed!

Balsamroot species also hybridize extensively, as has been pointed out. In the Umatilla N.F. several quite morphologically different species seem to hybridize with each other, producing what appear to be entirely 'new' entities!

Are you sure that's a "former" president you're quoting. Perhaps the current one denies both.
