Update on the Wygant Peak trail

Post by candrus » March 30th, 2019, 5:20 pm

Trailkeepers of Oregon has worked on the Wygant Peak Trail for the last year to make it a first class hike in the Gorge. Gone now is the frightening poison oak crowding the trail, the numerous downed trees, and the skinny washout sections. Instead, you have a delightful stroll through old forests, cool stream bottoms, and occasional grand views of the Gorge. It is one of the few long distance trails that didn't burn during the big fire -- 8 miles round trip. Don't stop at the summit (a disappointment because of the dense trees) but continue west about 1/4 mile on a rough trail to a large meadow with an amazing view to the west.

Enjoy.

There's some really nice off-trail routes as well, but I think Wygant features some of the worst poison oak and tick infestations I've ever seen.
