TR backlog: McNeil Point 10/14/18

Post by CyrusK. » January 31st, 2019, 8:09 pm

I know it's late but I just joined the site and thought I should share some photos from some trips from over the summer. In late October I did went on a day hike up to McNeil Point to catch the last of the fall colors. Anyway, here's the pics:

Subalpine forest scene on the way up

Plenty of snacks on the way up, surprising to see them this late. Oval leaf blueberry, I think.

The striking berry of the blue bead lily

Mossy waterfall along the way. I think it's part of McGee creek.

Breaking through into a little clearing along the ridge, the glare hiding Hood's face.

An interesting little stream along the way. If you look closely enough, you can see the first touches of ice.

First good look at Hood from the little meadow near the junction with the Cathedral ridge trail.

Huckleberry color gradient

Entering the alpine, Barrett Spur and the moraines appear. The Glisan glacier is barely hanging in there!

The final approach

View of the headwall from the point. There's a very light dusting of snow (or rime) on the rocks above, but the Sandy's looking rather rocky.
And finally, for the parting shot:

Afternoon view from Bald Mountain.

If I was planning a trip out there for next fall, what's the latest I could safely plan to hike (and possibly camp) on Hood before the snow hits? We went last summer and absolutely loved it, and I'm ready to go back. Curious if anybody has an opinion on the fall. Thanks!

October, November, depends on the year. That's the best time because there are no bugs and it's not hot.

check weather
https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.p ... FRffVxKjIV

scroll around on the map and click where you want to go

check current snow level
http://adamschneider.net/hiking/snow_depth.html

click "usgs topo"

The weather was just about perfect in late October last year. High of 65 or so, no bugs, fall colors still around... Freezes at night but that’s bound to happen.
