Hello!
I'm Mike and my wife and I relocated to Portland from Upstate NY last October. We both enjoy hiking, snowshoeing, and backpacking, and the past year has not left us disappointed in any of those departments. We used to spend much of our time in the Adirondack High Peak region and we love that much of Oregon/Washington is just as (if not more) spectacular and much closer! We've been trying to get out and do something most weekends and between heading north to Mount St. Helens, east to Mt. Hood, south to the Three Sisters Wilderness or west to the coast our to-do list seems to be growing much faster than it's shrinking
Some favorite backpacking treks I've taken are 10 days in the New Mexican Rockies, many 2-4 day trips in the Adirondacks, and 4 days hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Locally, we backpacked the Broken Top Loop Trail about a month ago and we are hoping to complete the Timberline Trail over Labor Day (assuming the smoke situation is such that it will be feasible/enjoyable). A wish list backpacking hike would definitely be a track or two on the South Island of New Zealand. We got married there in 2012 and spent a couple weeks campervan camping and hiking on our honeymoon, but we didn't get a chance to get in any backpacking. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Anyway, I've been lurking for a while so I thought it was high time to say hello.
Cheers!
Mike

machu picchu, that must have been cool, nice, and welcome

Yeah, Machu Picchu was pretty incredible. Two highlights were 1) passing through Dead Woman's Pass at ~14000 feet and 2) getting up at 3:30 am the last day of the hike to climb in the dark to the Sun Gate and watch the sun rise over Machu Picchu. There was a fog over the city that we were able to watch slowly evaporate as the sun came up. It was definitely unforgettable.
Thanks for the welcome! I look forward to contributing where I can and learning where I can't

Welcome! Sounds like you've been to some amazing places! Hope to see your trip reports on here. Sorry it's so smoky here. Our summers never used to be like this, but I'm afraid it's the new normal.
Tell me about it! No matter how much hiking and backpacking I do my list never gets shorter!our to-do list seems to be growing much faster than it's shrinking

Thanks!
Yeah, I've taken advantage of other's trip reports for so long that I figure it's about time that I start contributing some of my own
