recommendations?

Post by Wyeast pal » July 4th, 2018, 8:15 am

Looking for recommendations for GPS unit and Oregon maps for it.

I know that I don't want only screen touch.

Used GPS extensively for work years ago, so not a newbie but am out of the loop lately. Have read several reviews and the info here but much of it is old now.

Looking at Garmin GPSMAP 64s.

Maps - what open source shows Oregon trails? or is spending the $ on map product worth it?

thanks!

http://www.switchbacks.com/gpsmaps.aspx

free, includes tracks of many popular trails

I use the obsolete Garmin 60, 64 would be good

Why don't you use smartphone and, for example, Gaia?

You know, I am glad that you suggested that. I should really reconsider that. At work we are all using our smart phones for data collection with an ArcGIS program. Could add the trail layer to that.

Issues that I would need to resolve:
battery life lasting more than one day...
storage... I have an older iPhone 5 with only 8 or 16.
and...sometimes I have issues with touchscreen devices in with winter... don't want to take gloves off... and can't see the screen in bright conditions...

I am firmly planted in the 20th century. I have a flip phone. Why would I get rid of it if it still works

I have been thinking about replacing with smartphone and have read many threads about this. Too lazy.

Get a USB power pack to recharge your phone as needed

Can you buy more memory?

Maybe time to get a new smartphone?
