Wyden is the former chair of and a senior Democrat on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee [the committee reviewing Zinke's nomination]

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today released the following statement after abstaining from voting on the nomination of Rep. Ryan Zinke to lead the U.S. Department of the Interior:

“Today I abstained from voting on Representative Zinke because Oregonians need clarification on recent news reports that indicate he may be interested in moving the management of all the nation’s forests into the Department of the Interior, including those currently managed by the U.S. Forest Service,” Wyden said.

“After sixteen years, two administrations, and at least two different management plans, the Department of the Interior has yet to successfully implement a management plan for the 2.6 million acres of the O&C forests. If he is confirmed as Interior secretary, Representative Zinke should focus first on managing these forests rather than forcing our communities to wait years for the administration to reorganize forest management. Instead of wasting time and taxpayer dollars, what’s needed is effective, balanced forest management. The U.S. Forest Service, which manages 193 million acres, already faces a major backlog in forest management.

“Before I vote on Representative Zinke’s nomination I need answers from him about whether he intends to divert his attention if he is confirmed as Secretary of the Interior from managing Oregon’s forests to reshuffling bureaucracies.”

Jesus,

We are screwed at almost every level of gov't, agency and on almost every environmental front. Will there be anything left standing or worth saving in 4 years?

Randman,

I stood up for you in one of your earlier posts, piggybacking your message concerning public land transfers. I have written to my local US representative, Governor Brown (concerning the Elliott), my local Oregon representative, and Ted Wheeler just for the hell of it. For most of the people I wrote to I only hope they can communicate our message to the powers that be, since national issues are largely out of their jurisdiction. That being said, I think we all appreciate that you are striving to keep us in the know concerning the assault on public lands in Congress right now.

However, it feels like your messages are bordering on spam right now. You don't respond or partake in forum discourse and the mechanical nature of the posts, while possibly well-intentioned, may be rubbing some on Oregon Hikers the wrong way. How about coming out as a real person with a human response to those who have read and engaged on your posts? A little personality goes a long way...

Somewhat related to all this, while doing some research concerning HR 621 I happened upon a sportsmen website who also have taken issue with the proposed land distribution. I'm not a hunter (in fact I've opposed all forms of gun recreation and most hunting - a different conversation), but I signed the petition nonetheless. More than anything I was impressed by how organized they were from an advocacy standpoint. Maybe hunters in general have a more focused pursuit than hikers and better form lobby-like interests, but perhaps we need to add another forum here for organizing and pooling our collective interests to become a stronger voice...

Thanks for looking into this more. I followed the link you posted and signed the petition, tweeted @jasoninthehouse about his bill and donated to Teddy Roosevelt conservation association. Keep up the pressure!

Don't know about RandMan's personality but the topic itself is critical if you like wandering in the woods for whatever reason. So I'll repeat a previous [edited] post and add another.

Previously on OregonHikers,

Outdoor recreation – from hiking to hunting to all outdoorsy pursuits in between – is a sustainable industry that each year generates $646 billion in consumer spending and supports 6.1 million direct jobs. What confused me for awhile is how a huge outdoor industry ($646 billion is equal to the annual defense budget) could keep losing out to the much smaller cut/dig/despoil/privatize crowd. My take is that while the outdoor industry is huge, it's still composed of a multitude of fiefdoms that don't necessarily get along with one another: hikers versus mountain bikers, hikers versus hunters, OHV riders versus equestrians, etc., etc. Put these squabbling factions up against a smaller, but ferociously more focused thing like Koch Industries (to name just one), and you're toast. Gabriel Howe makes some good points about inclusion here, as does Land Tawney here.

And now some quotes from this post:

"...the Outdoor Industry Association came out in support of Trump’s pick for secretary of the interior, Ryan Zinke, who often voted against environmental measures when he was a U.S. representative from Montana. Members of the association include brands with popular social media followings like REI, Clif Bar, Keen, and Prana. These companies aren’t required to agree with every philosophy of an administration that their trade group publicly supports, but consumer outdoor gear is a massive industry that’s been well marketed via social outlets. And the connection is worth considering as the brands who purvey wilderness porn — or individuals those brands supply who do the same — stay silent."

"...limitations [on speech by government employees] don’t exist for accounts like @myadventurepassport (around 12,500 followers), @rei (1.5 million followers), or @theclymb (58,400 followers). And yet none of these has chosen to use its considerable online following to talk about the threats being lodged at its muses. One notable exception is Patagonia, which made a statement the week after the election about the need to protect public lands and the environment, declaring all proceeds from Black Friday sales would go to environmental causes. Patagonia’s popular Instagram account (2.4 million followers) also has not wavered, with multiple posts pointing out its position regarding climate change." So, whether you like corporations or not, having a large, rich one on your side that loves the outdoors can't hurt.

So, again, I really think we need to focus on what we have in common here, and not on what can be used to divide us, or we'll be hiking across a clearcut to view an open pit mine, provided - of course - that we're even allowed to cross all that newly privatized land in the first place...
