New Year's Eve: anyone planning to spend the night outside?

I've decided that I'm going to camp out somewhere on New Year's Eve this year. Anyone else thinking of doing this?

I'm so far past the idea of experiencing overnight discomfort "just because".
My epic tales of misery are now relegated to trips of less that 20 hours.
Yeah, I'm getting to be an old pansy. Pretty soon I'll be shopping for an RV.

I've thought about renting a lookout for New Year's Eve one of these days, but that's the closest I'll ever come. For one thing, the days are SO short that time of year that when camping you'd have to go to bed at 5pm.

White River Canyon is GREAT for a quick overnight snowcamping trip, to test out gear and get a feel for it. One can find sheltered spots at about the place where the Timberline Trail enters the forest after crossing the river.

You can extend the trip a little by exploring downstream of the highway, if the mileage is not enough to attract you:

Or, I guess you could camp in the rain at Eagle Creek or something.

Does "in a yurt at the coast" count as outside? Because that's the closest I'd get in January.

Sounds like a great idea. I am gearing up to do more winter camping, but I am finding I want to camp with other people more, and I don't have anyone in my circle who is very enthusiastic about winter camping.

I don't tend to plan local camping trips much in advance, since I can't predict what the weather will be doing. I guess that is why I haven't had ideas like camping on New Year's Eve.

If by "outside," you mean in my comfy warm bed in my house, then yes. Any other definition, is a no.

I've done a couple of snow bivouacs and they aren't all that uncomfortable with the correct gear, but I can't say they were so enjoyable I was aching to get back out there.

snow camping is okay - a little hard to keep warm, and it's sort of claustrophobic because once I'm in camp it's hard to walk around

camping when it's below freezing but not much snow around is nice

Mutt and TodF, I have other plans for New Years but I am in to snow camping and looking for others who are too. I have a BD mega lite that's great as a common cook tent and place to hang out between nightfall and bedtime, especially if the snow is deep enough to dig out benches and a central table. Let's chat.
