Great report! That really is an excellent loop. I did it as a dayhike last June, and loved it. Would truly be fun to be up there overnight in the snow, though. Not sure I ever honestly figured out the storm shutters - where are all those boards (legs that hold them up) stored?

I stayed overnight there once during bad weather. Thunderstorms rolling through between there and Mt Hood.

Those boards are inside. Not obvious what to do with them. Except now with those pictures

Yep, a quick how-to guide up there would prolly be handy. I had to look around for the supports too. Found them inside stashed under one of the bunks. They are individually numbered to go with the shutters. Use extreme caution if opening them as they are heavy!! Probably best done with two or three people. Some of the shutters have nails sticking out on the underside too to add to the excitement. (Make sure your tetanus shots are up to date.) Once they're up, the supports need to be secured in place with pins; found them in one of the drawers after some searching. To help complicate things there's a bunch of different sizes for the pins; some of the supports only take the smaller ones. Best to check that in advance.

Wow, yeah, I never even thought to look around inside for them! Heh, I was digging all around down under. I did find a shattered 2x6 that worked to prop one shutter up, but it was precarious. And, yeah, DARN heavy! Good job getting that all worked out! Now I have something new to try next time up there.

Thanks for the early season post on this loop. The Lowes have it in their ''50 Hiking Trails'' classic, which is what I followed when I first did it. Thanks also for the details on the stashes for the shutter supports. I have yet to spend the night up there, but now I know that everything is there, you just need to look for it!

@KepPNW: Nice shot of the peaks from the lookout there. Obviously Mt. Hood on the right... Mt. Rainier through the tree corridor straight ahead? Wasn't sure if it was Adams or Rainier.
