First Auto Trip Around Mt Hood - 1913

I love this stuff! Things we do routinely were big news 100 years ago. Since the historic highway in the Gorge hadn't been built yet, they were following wagon roads. No wonder it took 11 hours.

Thanks for posting that. What a fascinating find. The pictures of the old car with Hood in background were obviously cool, but the drawn map was equally interesting for me, since I'm a bit of a map nerd.

Nice find, Jeff! Fascinating to see how the "loop" evolved over the years -- I had no idea that a road from Tygh Valley to Government Camp was considered passable in 1913! I also love how the original "loop" bypassed Sandy, passing through Marmot and staying along the Sandy River. All of that route is still passable, and makes for an interesting detour from the Highway 26 hordes.

Thanks for posting -- this helps with a blog article I've been piecing together for awhile, too!

Tom :)

article says 11 hours for drive...rather surprising for what roads must have been in 1913
