You must have gone up the San Jacinto tram. Actually a ski lift I believe.

Those mountains North of Los Angeles are amazingly wild for being so close to so many people. I lived down there for 8 years and hiked up there often.
The tram is an amazing disc-shaped one and rotates so everyone gets great views as it climbs from less than 2,600' elev. to over 8,500. I suppose you could take Xcountry skis up there but downhill, no.

It is very popular in the summer months and well worth the experience.

I vaguely remember it from 1970s. Seems like it was a ski lift, used for non skiiers during the summer.
