Rockslide on trail near Ponytail Fals

Post by justpeachy » December 1st, 2013, 11:16 am

A rockslide has covered the trail near Ponytail Falls. If you're hiking west it's maybe 0.2mi beyond the waterfall. There are some pretty huge rocks!

Fortunately it's crossable if you're careful:

Yeah, I was there a couple of weeks ago. The slide looked pretty old to me so I foolishly assumed that it was well known and I didn't report it. I will be sure to report anything I come across in the future.

The PCTA Mount Hood Chapter took on this challenge today (15 Dec 2013). In the winter, we help on any trail in the Gorge. Most of our section of the PCT is under snow.

On the way up to Pony Tail falls, we had to move this huge boulder about 30 feet. Rock bars and rock slings make it easier. We always make sure the resting spot is solid and the rock won't wobble on someone's toes.

This was Tyler's rock. He led the movement and directed everyone.

We try to dress up the work so it looks like it's been there a long time.
After this, we cut a path in the ice on the west side of Pony Tails, where it's so very slick. We broke up the ice and added dirt/gravel for a bit of traction. We know it's temporary but still a help for us and anyone else.

Path made, gravel and dirt moved from nearby slides

Then we found the slide. Reposting Cheryl's picture as the "before". The boulders looked smaller in this photo. We had to move many big monsters.

We had a nice mix of very experienced volunteers to brand new rookies. Cheers to a job well done and a successful work project.

hikers are lucky there are such hard working volunteers.....remember in Sierras years ago they used explosives once after I passed.....use of pry bars and rhythmic movement led to gandy dancers songs to keep all in time moving heavy steel rails..... thanks again for such efforts
