Crown Point Photos/ September 1963

Post by forestkeeper » August 17th, 2013, 4:00 pm

Hello all. Hope everyone is having a safe and enjoyable weekend. A few hours ago, while visiting my parents, my mom handed me a couple of brown paper grocery bags filled with old photos of the Forest Keeper family and ancestors. While digging through one grocery bag, I came upon a few old Crown Point Vista photos. I added just a little color for clarity and resized them to fit PH photo guidelines. So here ya go:

Now I'm not gonna name any names but there's a few of you out there that most likely remember when Crown Point looked like this. Isn't that right Don, Granny and Splinter? Oops! I still wasn't born yet (until that wonderful year of 1965 ;) )

One of the photos has a Crown Point State Park sign in it. Not too familiar with that park. Hope you enjoy these.

If you double click each photo, it enlarges for a better view. I especially like the map photo.

Here's a couple of pre Pearl Harbor (WW2) photos. Again, I added a little contrast and color to add clarity. Even though these two photos have nothing to do with hiking, they're pretty interesting. The first one is of the USS Arizona, which now lies at the bottom of Pearl Harbor:

And this second photo is of the USS Oregon, which a few pieces of the ship are now located in Waterfront Park.

Just looking at all the sailors standing at attention, as the USS Arizona leaves San Francisco Bay, brings a sad feeling. How many of those sailors, shown in the photo, are still trapped underwater in Pearl Harbor?

forestkeeper,

Great history, hang on to those pictures!

My mother, God rest her soul, used to tell about buying some of the bricks used in the steps (I think) to help raise funds for the work. I think she was in high school then.

Very cool. I've been spending a lot of time looking for old photos of the Historic Highway recently and I've not seen one like the one showing the Crown Point State Park sign!

I believe that is taken at the south end of where the parking lot is now, as you're coming down from Corbett. I thought that might be the old Chalet in the background, but it was demolished in 1947 and was higher up on the hill. Not sure what that building is.
