I came across this unlabeled photo and I don't recognize the location. It was with photos of other lookouts in the Mount Hood National Forest, but this photo may have been taken anywhere in Oregon or even Washington. Does anyone recognize the landscape in the background?

Re: Lookout: Where is this photo?
It doesn't look like Mount Hood country to me, Cheryl -- the row of peaks immediately behind the lookout, and just above the trees that touch the skyline (just left of center) look more like Washington State to me... maybe Goat Rocks? The only place I can think of in Mount Hood country would be looking southeast toward Park Ridge, but Jeff would be part of that view if that were the case (I think).

It looks somewhat like the High Rocks area, but I didn't think there was a tower on top there.

Re: Lookout: Where is this photo?
It could be -- but to me, the canyon below drops off too quickly. The cliff is right -- this is a view from what would be the opposite direction: the lookout tower stood on the highest point, right next to the cliff:
Here's the view west from the lookout site -- I don't think the Signal Buttes (shown in this view) are the peaks in the lookout photo, however:
Hmmm.....

Re: Lookout: Where is this photo?
That is what I was thinking it was like - low to the ground. I'm kind of surprised it is that large, though. It looks like there used to be some sort of structure below the lookout - maybe it was an old garage or something.justpeachy wrote:There was a lookout tower at High Rock but it was a different style.
Thanks for posting that photo.

Re: Lookout: Where is this photo?
I'm stumped too.. I hope someone can identify it.
The tower is a 1936-1952 L-4, but that don't narrow it down enough since there were over 2000 of them in the northwest.
I also notice the shadows in the photo are fairly steep meaning close to noon?? Which leads me to believe we are looking in an easterly direction??

Re: Lookout: Where is this photo?
Could that flat area be the Big Lava Bed and perhaps that is either the Big Huckelberry Mountain LO or another one on the way to Grassy Knoll?
here is a view looking more northerly:

Those pictures look very promising in terms of matching up the background landmarks! Where were they taken, Jen? Was it on Big Huckleberry?
UPDATE: I later identified the correct location of this lookout as Little Bald in the Wenatchee National Forest.
