Tam MacArthur Rim

Post by BeaverDawg » July 15th, 2008, 10:12 am

Just wondering if anyone has done any hiking the the Sisters, OR area recently. We are planning on hiking Tam MacArthur Rim later this month and would be interested in the snow levels/trail conditions.

I haven't been up there in a year but when I went, it sure was hot and dusty. In fact, I went the day Black Butte went up in flames similar to Mt. Adams right now. Toasty. Bring lots of water. The lake at the trail head is freezing but refreshing and they rent row boats cheap if you continue down the road a ways. Also, on the Rim, itself, are some very friendly chipmunks who appreciate almonds, so bring extra for bribery. The view is amazing.

Excuse me Anna, I must step in and object. You are not the first person to write about feeding chipmunks on a mountaintop, and I am surprised the previous people who mentioned this were not questioned on this action.

Please dont feed the squirrels or other critters when you are visiting their habitat. Encouranging wild animals to depend on human food is not helpful for their survival. Tam Macarther Rim is within the 3 Sisters Wilderness, it is not a petting zoo. I was able to photograph this beautiful golden mantle squirrel up there without feeding it:

If it had come closer to ask for food I would have had to scream at it and maybe throw a few rocks to make it more wary of colorful bipeds.

The StatesmanJournal ran an article on the 15th about that area, it didn't sound good.
Here is the link. http://www.statesmanjournal.com/apps/pb ... 034/SPORTS

That is a good article. With one sad little sentence all by itself:

"Most backcountry trails above 5,000 feet remain solidly snowed in."

....so true, and so sad.

I have to agree with cfm: Admire the wildlife, but please, please don't feed it!

Thanks for the article link! Looks as though September might be a better time to go!

I'm not worried at all. I've got friends in high places. ;-)
