Larch Mountain

Post by -Q- » July 9th, 2008, 11:25 pm

With the weather looking great the rest of the week, I am looking for a hike with nice views of the high Cascade peaks. Was thinking of a return trip to Mirror Lake and TDH Mtn (sounds like ribbons can guide non-GPS hikers to the top) or maybe Larch Mountain. Does anybody know the conditions of the trails near the top of Larch Mountain (Oneonta Trail, Multnomah Creek Way, Larch Mountain Trail)? I am guessing they are still snow covered, but with the road up Larch Mtn open, I am wishful thinking. I really got get me a GPS ;)

Any other suggestions for a nice summit view with little/no snow?

Thanks!

Table Mountain will give you views of five Cascade peaks and I believe it is snow free. I'll be up there tomorrow and I can let you know. From the recent trip reports I've seen, I think Larch still has a way to go.

I was up to Larch via the Larch trail the weekend before last. Somewhere between 3000 and 3500' it was all snow. I didn't find this to be a problem at all because the route is easy to follow by keeping the ridge edge to the left going up and shooting for the peak. The tricky part is the path going down to the parking lot has deep slopped snow but you can bypass that mess by staying on the ridge just above the path. The snow was easy to walk on without sinking. I'm sure the conditions are even better now. Going down the backside toward Bell Creek was a bit tricky finding the trail after it makes a turn from the ridge line to the North.

Franklin ridge trail is clear (at least to the larch cutoff).

Table Mountain is snow free except for a couple of small patches under the trees and all the trails are in fine shape. I was up there Monday 7/7.

If your goal is a full 360 view of all the volcanos it's hard to beat Silver Star Mountain. The hike listed here is basically snow free:

I have been wanting to get up Silver Star Mtn for awhile now. Glad to hear its finally snow free.

This afternoon I decided to hike a trail thats been in the back of my mind for awhile now...The Nesmith Point Trail.
Really nice hike with great views along the way. Nice to check out the Hardy Ridge top to bottom. I have been wanting to hike the Hardy for some time now. Great views of Mt Adams all afternoon. Mt St Helens was mostly in the haze.

Nesmith is completely snow free now.

Gotta love the Nesmith Point sign being 'eaten' by the tree up on the Point. Got a real chuckle out of seeing that.

Saw a huge deer right under the US Geological Survey Marker on the rock point near the summit. Amazing how they can gallop at ease through that thick forest

But there's a detour that sounds doable for regular passenger cars.
