I hear you on wanting to do it without a cat. But it seems to me that the guides are in the business of getting people to the top. So many people overestimate their abilities the cat helps helps with customer satisfaction. Mount Hood is not to be taken lightly, my uncle got lost one spring day, and his partner died. You are smart if you know your limits.

Perhaps an alternative for you is to join a mountaineering program, perhaps with the Mazamas. You can climb with them and learn skills to last a lifetime
