End of April snow hikes on Mt Hood?

Post by krisro » April 4th, 2022, 12:05 pm

Hi. I'm going to be in the Mt Hood area end of April (from Canada). I've been told it's not a great time for snowshoeing but I assume there are still plenty of snowy trails that can be hiked with spikes or snowshoes even if the snow isn't great.

Any recommendations for 5-8 miles, any elevation. Views, yes please! Is Mirror Lake/Tom Dick Harry still doable then (I have only done it in March)?

Thanks,
Kris

The other side: go up the Tilly Jane Trail to the stone hut below Cooper Spur, or go over to Cloud Cap Inn and hang out on the deck. This is a relatively short but steep route. Views open up when you get on the ridge. But beware of forecasts for west winds.

End of April should be a GREAT time for heading up in the snow. Days are longer, snow is more consolidated, more sunny days.

You could hike from White River Sno Park up to Timberline Lodge. That's a nice trip in the winter, and I bet there's a boot trail to follow in the spring.

I've hiked up snow on the Elk Meadows Trail route to get to Lamberson Butte before. There are some steep slopes, but the views are awesome, and it's pretty wild.

I've hiked up to Paradise Park in the fall for snow camping, though I've never done it in the spring. I'm not sure how hard the route finding would be. (Just reread your post- this one is longer than your requested 5-8miles)

Believe it or not, I barely ever ride a mountain bike.
