Cape Disappointment Lighthouse

Post by mtncorg » October 13th, 2021, 8:49 am

The Cape Disappointment lighthouse path had been closed by the Coast Guard due to vandalism, drugs in Deadman's Cove and the need to rescue people who got in trouble off trail (again, Deadman's Cove). As of last weekend, the trail is reopened. From the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, you drop down on the same trail meeting up with the concrete road coming up from the Coast Guard station to the lighthouse. Entry is still off-limits to Deadman's Cove. During the week, watch out for the occasional car or van coming up from the station to the Coast Guard river bar monitoring lookout next to the lighthouse.

I read that the view is just as good from the L&C Center, but that is not true since the Cape headland blocks the direct view over the Columbia River mouth. It is especially interesting when the National Motorboat School is out in the waves practicing. The local Coast Guard station personnel have put a lot of time cleaning things up which, I understand, got a little out of hand over the pandemic time. They are to be commended. Remember the $10 day/$30 year park pass for either the L&C or Waikiki Beach start point for the official Oregon Hikers Cape D walk.

The Coast Guard station, itself, remains off limits.
