have you noticed the bugs are worse this summer?
I'm not sure, but it seems like it to me vs. previous cooler summers. In both Oregon and Washington. Maybe something to do with the heat and no rain?

They are early mostly I think. The heat melted the snow and warmed the little melt pools, which the baby mosquito larvae love.

I haven't been bothered at all this year and so far, in my experience, there are far fewer bugs than in past years. I was bit on a couple of hikes in June, but nothing for the past month. I hiked 65 miles in July and 41 miles in June. I hope saying this doesn't jinx me for the rest of the year!

Sort of. Had one of the worst mosquito days of my life near Cast Lake. But other than that, really hasn't been a problem.

Not a bad year for me. Seems that about the last 5 years or so have been pretty tame. In the years before that they were voracious and lethal.

It's so local in time and space
If a breeze happens on the day you're at a place the bugs can be no problem, but the next day if it's calm the bugs can be terrible

I go to Odell Lake to the same place during the same week with fundamentally the same weather each year. 5-10 years ago they were always cut-throat. Recent years have been non-existent almost. I wonder if everything is happening earlier with the hitter and drier summers.
