Can anyone recommend a short backpack in Eastern Oregon for this week-end?

Post by Natalie13 » June 1st, 2021, 4:52 pm

Hello, everyone! My backpacking friends and I have only recently (re)discovered the beauty of backpacking in Eastern Oregon. We'd like to do a short backpack this week-end (June 5). Any recommendations? Baker City area would be ideal.

Thanks in advance for sharing your Oregon knowledge!

Strawberry mountain.

You didn’t define “short” so i can only spitball suggestions. You can make an easy two day trip by parking at the strawberry campground and hiking into either a spot on the main strawberry lake, little strawberry lake, or up the mountain to onion meadow and summit if snow is clear. I don’t see any snow on the snowtels but I have never been up there this early either.

Here are some short routes I've done over the years:

Believe it or not, I barely ever ride a mountain bike.

Thank you so much for the replies! We will gladly take recommendations for any length at this point; can always make something an out-and-back to accommodate time if necessary.
