Rather than staying on trail, you could walk directly south, off trail, for 0.4 mile, then 1 mile southeast. That would stay out of the non recreation area. If you had gaia on a phone you could avoid the non recreation area.

I wonder what the tribe would say, anyone ask them?

Prior to the Cougar Creek Fire in 2015 the traverse of Yakama land as a part of the loop - "the Gap" - was open on the upper route. Camping was allowed at Sunrise Camp and Avalanche Valley - no permits required. A lower route through Hellroaring Canyon has always been closed. Since the fire, all Yakama lands in the Mt Adams area have been closed except for one day per year in the Fall.

I have heard recently that the Yakama finally put up no tresspassing signs on the Round the Mountain Trail on the way to Bird Creek Meadows. On a recent trip I spoke to a group near Horseshoe Meadow that had intended to do the loop and didn't know it was closed. They came upon those no tresspassing signs and turned around. I do not know if there are signs on the northern boundary.

There were rumors that these lands might open this year, but the Yakama have been very hard hit by COVID19 and it interfered with the restoration work they were doing resulting from the fire. So for now it is closed and there are no "permits" available to enter except for special reasons like trail/road maintenance (WTA trips for example).

Correct. The small section of the PCT south of Cispus Pass is fine with no special permit, I just hiked it last week. There are multiple signs saying to stay on-trail.

Before the fire you could buy a permit from the Yakama tribe at Bird Lake for $5, bit I’ve heard of nothing like that since post-fire.

I did the loop in 3 days several years ago. Here is my report. It was an awesome loop.

I’m planning to do the loop this weekend, but my friend had to bail and he has the spot device. Is there any cell service on the gap section?

I did both the Timberline and Loowit loops in two days each this summer, I hope I’m not crazy to think I can do Adams solo in 3....

I don't recall, usually, I have pretty good luck up high (like up high on a glacier like that), but I don't recall if I had it or not. (And I'm speaking for Verizon which I find to be the best). AT&T is usually worse and T-Mobile is typically the worst in the backcountry I find (anecdotally).
