Elkhorn Ridge: good time to go?

Post by adamschneider » July 11th, 2020, 6:26 pm

I've been watching the NOHRSC snow depth map for the Elkhorn Ridge area west of Baker City. Those mountains still had a surprising amount of snow into June, but it looks like it's finally gone. Would this be a good time to head out there? (I'm thinking about hiking up to Rock Creek Butte and/or Elkhorn Peak from the Twin Lakes Trailhead, elevation range 5500'-9100'.)

Well I guess that answers my question. I may need to think about whether I should try to visit the north end of the crest too. (I'd be day-hiking, not backpacking.)

EDIT: I just looked at reports on AllTrails, and it sounds like my tiny car might not be able to make it to the Twin Lakes trailhead. :( I might HAVE to start from Anthony Lakes. (On the bright side, it looks like there are some loop possibilities with the Crawfish Basin Trail.)
