Mt. Adams - Round the Mtn (East Side)

I have read a few reports on going around Mt Adams on the east side, but they all are going northbound, or are using the higher route across the glacier.

Has anyone done this southbound, using Mike Woodmansee's route? I believe this image shows a good depiction of it.

I'm mostly concerned with going up the north side of Ridge of Wonders. It looks doable using caltopo.com, but the map isn't the same as actually being there on the ground!

I've seen reports of crossings down low, which involve lots of wallowing through marshes and bushwhacking. And possibly a difficult river crossing (which is why people prefer the glacier). But the lower route is not and has never in recent times been open/allowed. Prior to the Cougar Creek fire, the standard upper route was open with no permit, with camping allowed only at Sunrise Camp and Avalanche Valley. At the moment, the entire Yakama lands are closed except for one or two days per year, as per regs. But they don't make much effort to let people know so some people are still going. There is, as always, some rumor that Bird Creek Meadows could open this year.

Please respect the remaining lands of indigenous people. Closed means closed.

A few years ago when I was trying to plan a Woodmansee route I called and talked to a Forest Service ranger about it. She strongly suggested not going that way because of the dense brush.

Are there any routes around Adams that dodge reservation land? Even if they are really sketchy?

Of course. You've just got to extend your radius. :)

texasbb, I don't suppose they specifically mentioned where the brush was? From what I can tell, it really looks like hellroaring meadows would be the worst.

This person took video of the hike, going northbound 4 years ago:

reservation boundary goes through summit, no way to go around mountain without going through reservation
