Rainy - Whatum trail #409

Post by dmthomas49 » August 18th, 2019, 2:54 pm

I was considering an out and back hike from Rainy Lake to Whatum Lake next week. Should the 409 trail be in good condition? Also, when you reach the intersection with the Anthill trail, which is the best way to get to the lake Anthill or stay on the Rainy Whatum trail?

I hiked the RW trail in early June, between the Anthill and Herman Cutoff trails. The tread was in good condition and wide enough that no encroaching plants were an issue (it's an old road bed). There were a good number of logs down across the trail, but all were easily stepped over.

I will say that, as an old road bed, I didn't find the RW trail to be very scenic. As such, I would take the Anthill trail down to the lake, just to get off the old road.

I'd say the side trips to Chinidere and Tomlike Mountains are absolutely worth it as well if you have the time.
