Several years ago, a friend and I hiked up the West Fork Lostine and stayed the first night at Minam Lake. It was very pleasant and we had it to ourselves in mid-August, as I recall. We then hiked up Carper Pass and spent a few nights in the Lakes Basin, went up Eagle Cap, day-hiked to Glacier Lake, etc., before exiting via the East Fork Lostine. You could do the same thing, but make Minam Lake your base camp and not stay in the Lakes Basin with the crowds. It would add some mileage to go up and over Carper Pass and back multiple times, but it might be worth it if you are craving solitude.
