Mt Adams High Camp Conditions

Post by SCtoPDX » June 27th, 2019, 6:13 am

Thinking of headed up to High Camp on Mt Adams for the 4th of July weekend...has anyone been up there recently? I called the Ranger and it appears that the snow level is right around 5600'; High Camp is at +- 6800'. Should I expect consolidated snow, or will there be patches melted out?

Thanks in advance,
Ian

I've never been up there early season, but given the exposure would expect some melted out spots. The bigger issue might be getting there as the steep trail traverses around the left side of the headwall and it could require negotiating some steep snow over a long slope if the trail is not melted out and it likely won't be since it is very north facing and won't get much sun. On the other hand, that is the approach route for the north side route for climbing Adams and maybe climbers have already tamped down a route up there.

It might be easier to get there over snow coming in from the west than taking the trail. I know people go that way but I haven't done so.
