Tom, dick and Harry mountain free of snow? Other options for sunset hike?

Post by cgibsong002 » June 13th, 2019, 9:10 am

Anyone hike mirror lake or Tom dick and Harry in recent weeks? I'm looking to do a sunset hike this Saturday with sunset views of Hood. Is it hikeable this time of year or still covered in snow?

Any other potentially better suggestions for seeing the sunset on the mountain?

No snow at all 6/3.

Hiked it last weekend. No snow, but the bugs near Mirror lake were awful.

Will be curious to hear what the parking situation is like that time of day on a weekend. It was already full when I left around noon on a non-summer Monday (and also already covered in broken window glass).

I bet it's not too bad. Most people seem to disappear from trails after about 5pm.

Is the new tail from the ski bowl parking lot open?

Oo that's no good. Did you go up the mountain or just to the lake? Was it bad enough that it wasn't worth going? I wonder if it's starting to dry out and get better with the recent weather.

Other options?

That spot on the Timberline Trail just south of Bald Mountain... amazing sunset views and an easy hike in.

The road to the Top Spur trailhead isn't great, but by no means a deterrent.

I went all the way to the mountain. The part of the trail until immediately before Mirror lake was fine. But the entire loop trail around the lake was terrible; I couldn't stand still for more than ~3 seconds without getting bitten/swarmed. The entire mile from the lake up to the ridge was nearly as bad. Once the trail started following the top of the ridge the bugs disappeared again, and the summit was bug-free.

Of note, I was at the lake around 8:00 AM. So perhaps the bugs are less of a problem later in the day with warmer temperatures.

When I got to the trailhead around 7:00 there were only a few cars in the lot. But when I returned around 10:30 the lot was completely full.

It's been open since last fall.
