While this mess might not have been there without the shutdown, it's worth remembering that cleaning up messes like this one, and like the ones you inevitably see in the backcountry, is a big part of what rangers have to do when they are working.

Not all the bathrooms are closed, unfortunately. You may have seen this tweet on Friday from Governor Kate Brown, whose husband cleaned out a trashed bathroom at a sno-park. The photos are shocking. What goes through someone's mind when they come across a full/overflowing trash can and decide to add to the mess instead of packing it out? Disgusting.

Actually the bathroom at Tombstone pass looks like that all the time. People use it as a rest stop, very few people I've seen pull in there actually stop and use the trails.

Human behavior is really something.
