With your Saturn, you may end up stopping and walking the final mile to Brietenbush Lake TH.

You will have no problem getting to the S BB TH. Graveled smoothness.

One is a rough road (BL), the other is a rough trail (SB). With a Saturn, I think you'd better opt for the rough trail.

Thanks, all. You seconded Jeff the friendly Forest Ranger's advice. A most excellent weekend with crimson huckleberries, freezing tarns and needle ice...

We did head up to the top of Park Ridge for the view, though, what an incredible way to get your first glimpse of the park.

The Detroit Ranger station is also sending people in on the Woodpecker Trail, which, while less of a rocky beast + saves you a thousand feet of elevation gain, sends you up through ~4 grim miles of the Whitewater Burn.

I've always been curious about the Woodpecker Trail. It seems like it should have some incredible views of Mt. Jeff through the recent burn.
Does anybody know if the road up to the Woodpecker Trailhead is in decent shape for a normal passenger car?

Per Ranger Jeff on 10/12, yes. From chatting with folks while we were up there, plenty came up that way, no problem.

My wife and I went into Jefferson Park via the Woodpecker Ridge Trail mid August this summer. The road to the trail head was in good shape, and a trail crew was doing maintenance work on the Woodpecker Ridge Trail. All down fall had been cut out and the five person trail crew was putting in water bars.

Most any car could negotiate the road.

You haven't stated that your objective is Jefferson Park. Woodpecker Ridge is a good way to get there, and now that the heavily forested parts aren't forested anymore, there are some views.
I keep making protein shakes but they always turn out like margaritas.
