Oregon Hikers

I spent some time in Ollalie Lakes recently and was pleasantly surprised that small peaks in that area have great summit blocks that are scrambley. Twin Peaks and Double Mountain were the most fun. Are there more of these types of small peaks near the cascade crest?

What I am looking for is a walk up, non-technical approach, with a cool summit block that you can scramble. It's fun to scramble or walk back down and scramble the summit again from a different route. I have the 75 Oregon Scrambles book, but that covers the big climbs for the most part. I don't mind some back-country travel.

Lemei Rock is one that comes to mind - which is on the list.

Yes, Lemei Rock is a fun scramble. My Golden Retriever made it to the top with only one boost. There is really only one non-technical route to the summit and it is obvious if you follow the trail which goes around behind the summit ridge as you near the top.

Sawtooth Mountain is another in that area. You can easily make a Sawtooth-Bird-Lemei Rock loop. My Whittier is another one that comes to mind and obviously Indian Point. There is (was) an endless number of scambley off-trail routes in the Gorge.

Mt. Thielsen has a very fun scramble at the top.




Also Pinnacle Peak, in Mt. Rainier National Park just south of Paradise:

Plenty of stuff in Alpine Lakes. It's kind of a long drive from here, but a stellar area.

I've been to the alpine lakes a few times and have ticked off some summits. The indian heaven loop taking in those summits looks really fun - thx for the suggestion. Hopefully they open it before the season ends.

The Dark divide has lots of scrambley summits:

Scrambley summits are everywhere - If you are willing to go a bit farther afield, the list grows exponentially larger.

Mt Rainier has tons of great scrambles. It's closer than the Alpine Lakes, and so, so beautiful. Get Beckey's Cascade Alpine Guide, Volume I, and start dreaming!

One of my favorite Scrambley Summits. That being said the main reason I've replied to this post is to say I love the word Scrambley and will now add it to my lexicon

Thanks for the recommendations and happy to add to the collective lexicon. I might try Dark Divide soon as I had no idea there were scrambley summits in that area. Plus I have never really driven north of Trout Lake so extra credit adventure exploring a part of SW Washington I've never been to will be fun. I usually hit up Rainier and Washington locales more closely located near I-5.
