Awesome. Thanks so much!-Q- wrote:Hi there Sprengerssprengers4jc wrote:Q, what was your route through IH? Was it at higher elevations?
My route went like this...
East Crater TH-Junction Lake-Acker Lake via the old Chenamus Lake Trail & Cascade Crest Trail-Bear Lake-Deer Lake-Clear Lake-Cultus Lake-Lemei Rock Summit-Lemei Lake-Junction Lake-East Crater TH
Certainly some of the higher sections of IH.
The huckleberries are best down low.
Within 2 miles of the TH is perfect.
Some of the best berries I have ever picked
YUMMY!!

You bet Romannromann wrote:Q - thanks for berry beta. Back in the end of June I saw TONS of green little huckleberries in Indian Heaven, wondered if they did OK in this drought. Looks to be exceptional year for the berries if we won't get many more 90F+ days.
Also, should be lots in MSH area.
Lotsa little strawberries at msh too.
Mega yummy!!
Re: Indian Heaven Mosquitoes?
Just got back from a bugless overnighter in Indian Heaven. That's right, bugless in late July in Indian Heaven. I camped at Wood Lake hiking in from Crest Camp. But it also was the rebound on a stormy weekend so it was chilly and blustery. 49 degrees at 8pm. Been a while since I felt 49 on a camp. So with the coming next heat wave, you can't exactly count on it still being bugless because the bugs like the heat. Also, tons of through- and section-hikers.

I'm heading to Indian Heaven next week, any recent bug reports?
Sounds like it's been a fairly bug-free season up there so far, hope that holds!
Thanks!

I was through there last Monday (8/10) and the mosquitoes are long gone along with the biting flies. Not sure what the deal is this year with the yellow jackets. They were everywhere but they seemed more interested in doing whatever yellow jackets do then me.
Some of the lakes are looking pretty sad so plan your water stops accordingly. Placid, Lemei, Junction are all looking bad. Bear and Clear still looked good.

There was a bad mosquito season very early in Indian Heaven, in the spring. Briefly.
And I hear that the biting flies are bad in the North Cascades, bad enough to require long pants when hiking. A friend just did the northernmost segment of the PCT, to the border monument.

I was in the area yesterday (8/16) and no mosquitos and no biting flies. Also, I wandered all over the meadows of South Prairie and same observation. Yellow jackets were bad, though, and whenever I stopped, they buzzed around.
