Cripple Creek TH vs Cache Meadows TH

Post by slorimer3 » June 3rd, 2015, 8:44 pm

Heading towards the Rock Lakes and such this weekend. I've made the mistake of going to the Frazier TH in the past (never again). I've done the Shellrock Lake TH a couple times. Now, I'm looking for a new access point. How are the roads to trailheads for Cripple Creek and Cache Meadow? Any reason my little elantra couldn't make it? Thanks in advance!

The times I've been up 4635, it was fine for small cars. Not saying it's a fast road, but it was fine. They've fixed the two slides by Skunk Creek.

I drove up to the Cripple Creek TH last year.
Never again.

The road is fine, but the overhanging brush is terrible.
My mid-sized Tacoma was getting hit from all sides, and the top.

At multiple points, you are literally driving through a tunnel of brush.

The drive up is really slow.
Can't remember exactly, but I bet it took at least 30 minutes from the Ripplebrook RS.

For me personally, Shellrock is the best TH for that area.

The road is good but has a few big holes and we had to avoid some large boulders as of March. We also had to move a couple of fallen dead snags but it should be clear now :)

Is there still a ton of overhanging brush??
Or by some miracle did the road get brushed out since last summer??

There was a little brush but nothing terrible. I drive an older car so the brush doesn't bother me much :)
