Snow conditions on Mt Defiance trail?

Post by Aero » July 1st, 2008, 3:16 pm

Has anyone here hiked this trail recently? I'm wondering if the snow line has receded enough to make this doable without winter footwear; plus I'd hate to have to turn back for fear of losing the trail....

I was there a few weeks back and the snow came down to about 4000' above Warren Lake. If you go early in the day the snow should be solid enough to cross without winter footwear. I wouldn't worry about losing the trail...the snow is only at the top of the mountain and you just have to keep moving uphill so it would be difficult (but not impossible) to get lost. If I was going right now I would not wear winter boots, but I would probably use some lightweight gaiters.
