Yeah, when backing up there's no good way to 'pick a line' when the road is so rough a wrong move could tear out your oil pan. :(

i suppose some skill backing up in a narrow area, or on somewhat difficult terrain should be in every driver's ability. I've done it on some fs roads. But to backup on the terrible traverse, at least in a section or two that comes to mind is..curious. It's a little hard to imagine, wish I took video on it!

But sometimes drivers do commit to things that they only plan on achieving one way. I've gone on green/blue/black rated technical courses in the coast range with people in mod'ed jeeps and the idea you would back up or back down the length of those runs is kind of silly--those are more extreme cases but the drivers are at their skill ability going up. Sometimes like a technical climbing option, the best way down is to finish going up.

Hmmm - I wonder if all AWD systems are programmed to work in reverse? And even for traditional 4WD, there is no separate compound low. But then, if you're driving a tercel, you've got none of those in forward either.

Sure, I can imagine if a road is at the extreme limit for what a car can do, backing up would be a real problem for even the most skilled driver.

Yep. And just like climbing, a driver can get in deeper and deeper, wishing they had given up sooner. Nice analogy. Both climbing and driving, I've learned to constantly ask "can I safely back out"? If it's starting to get questionable, then it's time to reverse.

The old 4WD Tercel wagon (the one Jessie drove in Breaking Bad) took an interesting approach. On manual transmissions, first gear was extra low, and available only when in 4WD, thus providing a low gear without a transfer case. I think that was a great idea, but I bet it confused a lot of drivers.

Slightly related story, which I offer for your amusement, at the cost of my dignity:
I was going up a snowy hill in my 4WD automatic, reached the point where I decided it would be foolish to go higher, backed down, white knuckle all the way, nearly sliding out of control a couple times. When I reached bottom, I went to put it in Drive, and realized it already was! I had backed down in Drive! The torque converter is an amazing thing.

I felt that way with bennet pass/gunsight ridge. I was 12 miles in..with ~6 to go to lookout mountain, all of which I'd walked many times. I knew MOST of it was going to be fine.. it was the rutted section just south of Gumjuwac that really worried me, and indeed when I got there I was pretty motivated NOT to have to go back 15 miles of pretty rough road when I had just 3 more to 'safety', so I pushed through it. There was literally one 'step' that gave me trouble, the jack/edge of the frame (metal behind wheel) did come down on a rock as I slowly rolled over a drop, but center of car no contact. Then I had to get out and just scout a section ahead to pick my line spanning a rut/washout going down the center--not looked worse than it was to drive it.

I wonder how long they let the road go.. most of it is in solid shape. Just a few problem areas really could use some attention, a water bar or two, maybe a drainage pipe would go along way. Probably a few day's crew work in the summer. Can't imagine it's on Barlow's list of 'to-do'..
