20 Miler via Vista Ridge to Lost Lake in August???

Post by nwfotobug » July 18th, 2013, 3:43 pm

Hi Folks,

I thought I would throw this hike idea out there, and wondered if anyone saw any issues with anything before I make a go of it with 7 boy scouts (age 12 to 15).

Vista Ridge to Lost Lake

• Jump on the Vista Ridge Trail 626 at the end of Rd 1650 to McNeil Point via the Cairn Basin 1700ft EG to Cairn Basin, 2200EG to McNeil Point. = 5miles
• From McNeil Point to Lolo Pass Rd via the 600 (7miles) =12.2 miles here
• Cross lolo pass Rd staying on the PCT to the Lost lake turn off 4.1 miles,
• then down Huckleberry Trail 617 to lost lake 2.5 miles.
• 2.0 miles to the Lost Lake Trail head, across from the general store. = 20.8 total miles.

It looks like most of the elevation gain is at the start of the hike to McNeil point. I've seen some reports here of some of that area, but I havent seen anything on the PCT to lost lake, and down Huckleberry trail. I've heard the pct down to lolo pass road is fine, but steep coming down. Anything else I should know about? we are planning this hike on August 17th or 18th..I'm hoping the weather wont be too hot up on the Mt. We are planning on hitting the trail at 630am, which is when the sun is scheduled to come up.
