Cape Horn

Post by Tito goes hiking » October 22nd, 2011, 6:45 pm

This is a nice 7 mile loop hike on the Washington side of the Columbia river gorge. Part of the trail is closed from July 15th to February for Falcon nesting. Washington has done a lot of work on this trail with the addition of a viewing area and two tunnels so you don't have to cross highway 14. My friend Kathy and I along with our dogs Tito and Bodie went Friday and enjoyed the hike.

Did you stand in the middle of the Memorial overlook so you could check out your echo?

Was there a fun Discovery Pass fee for this hike now?

No fee and I dont think there will be one for a while because the trailhead is a bus park and ride for Skamania residents. The trailhead was the site of Tonys Tavern which burned down many years ago. Nancy Russell of the Friends of the Gorge bought the site and donated it to Skamania County. I think there would be an uproar if a fee was introduced.

thanks titogoes for the great tr and pics. also to beag for the update/past info on the area. It's a hike ive been wanting to do for a while now to see cigar rock. cape horn has always amazed me driving by on the oregon side and seeing it across the river.

so is the loop doable or is the closed part of the trail part of the loop?

The loop is open until January. Last year they had the lower part of the loop closed from Jan 1 to Jul 15.
