Here's a brief tutorial of the steps I go through to post trip reports. Hopefully this will help some people that are having issues. This isn't the only way to post pictures here, but I find it works well, when you want to post a lot of pictures in a relatively small time. If you already have your pictures online, it's probably the easiest way.
There are several things I do before I even go to portlandhikers. I pick the photos that I want to showoff, er showcase, and I resize them to 640x480. This isn't strictly necessary for the board, but I sometimes use the pictures on other sites as well, where size is more critical. I use photoshop to change my picture size, but many other tools work well too, including some free ones.
Next I upload all of the photos I'll use to photobucket. I've used photobucket for years and I'm generally happy with their free service. There are other services like flickr and smugmug that others use. The important thing is to build folders and keep your online pictures organized. Remember that if you move or delete photos from your photo site, they will disappear from your trip reports, as well. It's better to work out your organization ahead of time and stick with it. My scheme is to use a folder for each year and dated subfolders for each trip report. You might have a scheme that works better for you, but find something and follow it.
If your photos have really long filenames you might want to rename or copy them before you upload them. It's easier to have shorter file names even if the path is long. After you get all of your pictures uploaded to your photo site, it's time to start your trip report.
First, go to the trip report forum and click the new post button. Type in a few words of text, in our case, "Dog Mountain is cool". Click the preview button and you'll see something that looks like the next post.

Re: Pictures the Steve way
Obviously, we want to be more interesting than that, so let's add the first picture. If you only have one picture, you can use the attach file feature, but that can be pretty limiting.
The "Steve method" uses image tags. Open your photo site in another window and browse to your pictures. Find the direct link and copy it. In photobucket, each photo has three links beneath it and you just copy the one labeled "direct link" Other sites will have similar features. The important thing is that you need a direct link to the photo, not a link to the display page. Your link should end in ".jpg".
Go to your trip report type in "[img]", then paste in the exact link, the type in [/img].
Your code should now look like this:
Dog Mountain is cool
[img]http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j72/s ... G_5387.jpg[/img]
Clicking on preview will show you something that looks like the next post.

Next copy the entire image line and paste in several copies, so your code looks like this:
Dog Mountain is cool

This doesn't make a lot of sense when you see the preview (below)

Re: Pictures the Steve way
But now, with your organized photos and short file names, it's easy to change a character or two and show all of your pictures.

Re: Pictures the Steve way
Now you can add text in between your photos. You can also add blank lines or anything else to organize your report a bit better.
Dog Mountain is cool
There are cool butterflies
