Mount Rainier Road Trip 7-21-08

Post by Stevefromdodge » July 23rd, 2008, 3:05 pm

I was able to sneak up to Mount Rainier National Park on Monday after a half work day in Seattle.

My first stop was NW Trek outside of Eatonville. This is a wildlife park operated by the city of Tacoma. Admission is $15, but that gets you a guided tram ride through the free roam area, as well as access to the more zoo-like areas.

The park was in beautiful form. Since there wasn't enough time to hike, all of these photos are simple roadside shots.

The trails at Paradise were just beginning to melt out and are still covered with several feet of snow. Just down the valley road however, the lilies are in full bloom. (Sorry to bury you in photos, but words fail me every time I visit the park.)

Nice pictures, Steve - you covered a lot of ground in a day! That photo from the wildlife park looks like a young wolverine... or even a fisher?

I'm amazed--normally the meadows up at Paradise around July 4 look like the lower down ones that Steve photographed. Those who say the snow melt is about 6 weeks late seem to be on target.

Great photos, Steve! Rainier is a magical place, despite the horrendous crowds. You can't blame the crowds, either, with such fantastic scenery!

Love the pics from NW Trek! It's funny, I spent the first 18 years of my life living in the Puget Sound area, but never got a chance to visit NW Trek. Of all the places my parents took my sister and I, they never took us there.

I also especially love the 4th Mt. Ranier pic down. Is that looking into a canyon. I can't quite tell what it is, as I just woke up and I don't think my eyes are fully awake yet ;)

Great photos Steve. I have to keep reminding myself it really isn't that far away - I believe it less than 3 hours from our driveway to admission gate.

Actually it's only about 2 and a half hours to Longmire. It's an amazing place.
