Dog River Trail (Nov 25)
Definitely a winter hike on the Dog River Trail over the weekend -- cold and frosty and the fall colors are pretty much gone, with just a stray Larch or Cottonwood with some lingering gold foliage. Mount Hood was out with a bright jacket of snow, though I was a bit late to the rocky viewpoint at the 3 mile mark (my destination) for optimal photos. Lovely, nonetheless! With the foliage down, I was struck by the number of really big trees that somehow dodge the logger's saws in this area -- some really nice giants along this trail.

One of the very large Douglas Fir along the trail -- with some shelf fungus evident, but still growing strong:
One of the weathered Ponderosa Pine at the viewpoint (with an apprentice growing beside it):
Frosty fall leaves, all pretty much on the ground, now:
...and a really popular wildlife tree! A visual example of why standing snags are so important in our forests:
...a great way to walk off some of that Thanksgiving food and prep my brain for another week in the office!
